Dear fellow perfectionists, watch ‘Get Back’!

I’ve had a bit of a rough week. Just one of these weeks where you think everything you do is shit, not enough. I’ve been struggling to see the positive and I can’t see what I have actually achieved in the last year.

I guess it’s the end-of-year blues.

If you are like me and beat yourself up if things aren’t perfect, do yourself a favour and watch ‘Get Back’, Peter Jackson’s Beatles documentary on Disney Plus. We follow Paul, John, George and Ringo around as they record their album ‘Let It Be’ and plan their first live show in years.

I watched the first two episodes this Saturday. Six hours of my weekend observing the greats at work. And I found something that I didn’t expect – a change of perspective.

I think what the documentary shows is that there is no such a thing as a straight path to success. It makes visible that even the best songwriters of all time have to work hard, fail along the way, and are somewhat clueless about what they are doing.

It’s a brilliant opposite to social media, where we only see moments of success and the way there is left out.

It shows the improvising, the occasional strikes of inspiration, the mind-numbing practice, the fall-outs, the fun and silliness. If the Beatles had Instagram in 1970, they would have posted a promo video for their finished album, a live feed of their show on top of the Apple Studios building and a thank-you-for-all-the-fans-who-contributed-to-5-million-streams-on-release-day post. You get what I’m saying?

So, stop beating yourself up about being perfect. Hell, ‘Get Back’ sounded a bit shit at the start. You’ll get there. It’s all about the journey, not the goal.
